Considering counselling? Here's what to expect ...

Is it normal to delay making that first appointment - to procrastinate, before working up to it?
Does it take "guts" to go to counselling?
When I make that initial phone call (or walk up to your front desk), will I be asked why I want to come, or other personal info, right on the spot?
Even when I've booked an appointment to give counselling a try, is it possible not to feel totally obligated - to come, to accept what the counsellor says, to discuss issues beyond my comfort zone, or to return if I don't care to?
What if I run into someone I know in the waiting area?
Is there likely to be an old-fashioned couch in the counselling office?
When the session starts and I'm supposed to talk, where do I start?
Could I bring a friend to the first session - for support or to share some information, too?
Will my session be recorded or observed in any way?
Would my counsellor be likely to use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or some other particular method in my sessions - or would I have to get that somewhere else, if I really wanted it?
Counselling is supposed to be confidential, but what if I wanted to mention or deal with something iffy or illegal?
Someone just referred me to make a counselling appointment, and they want to hear when I follow through. Do you notify them?
How long will the appointment last?
After I tell the counsellor my situation, can I get them to support my case for why I needed to defer an exam?
By the end of my counselling appointment, what will I take away with me?
Who decides whether I make a second appointment, and how does that happen?
